“'First' For The Manawatu”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the August 27th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption: “Gordon McGregor and Vikki True (obscured), from the Palmerston North City Council's town clerk's department, competing in the "All Star Anything Goes" section of the competition”
The article read: “It was hardly a clash of the giants, but it was a "first" for the Manawatu, and possibly even New Zealand. And it happened in Palmerston North last weekend, (August 6), when staff from the Palmerston North and Wanganui City Councils met for competitions that varied from the hilarious to the skilful and the ridiculous.
One of the highlights was the "All Star Anything Goes" competition, based on the television series of stupid games. The result was a tie "but Wanganui cheated", said the ASAG event's organiser, Alison McDonald, of the Palmerston North City Council.
The Wanganui crowd won a soccer match between the two councils, Palmerston North cleaned up the basketball, table tennis and the golf, and Wanganui pipped the Palmerstonians in pool. About 100 players participated in the tournament.
Now the PNCC team is casting around for fresh teams to conquer. In the meantime, Alison says there will be a rematch with the Wanganui social club next year, and they hope to make the contest an annual event.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
