Mangaore Family Home - Mangahao Electric Power Scheme
- Description
This house appears to be one of the many family homes built for workers in the Mangahao electricity village, known as Mangaore. It is interesting to note that many of the houses are now listed on the Horowhenua District Councils Notable Buildings Register. Also of interest is the fact that originally there were no street names, houses were simply known as House 25 etc. The Mangahao Power Station provides hydroelectric power and is situated near the town of Shannon. It serves Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. After being delayed by the first world war construction began in late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924.
