Workmen's Huts - Mangahao Electric Power Scheme
- Description
Mangahao river camp located on a terrace above the river and associated project workings. This photograph provides a rare close shot of the workmen's huts. Several of the huts appear to be of wooden construction and designed for several individuals, while other huts are much smaller in side and thought to be for one occupant only. The Mangahao Power Station provides hydroelectric power and is situated near the town of Shannon. It serves Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. After being delayed by the first world war construction began in late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924.
