These images were taken for the August 20th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published.
The article read: “Pupils from the Palmerston North Karate School are shown taking part in the school's first tournament which was held in the Palmerston North Concert Chamber last weekend. The 45 entrants include karate exponents from Auckland and Foxton, as well as Palmerston North. The instructor in charge of the school, Mr Bill Hall, said the tournament was noteworthy for the number of entrants who scored well in both the kata (formal technique) and the kumite (free sparring).
Bill Harvey of Foxton won his section of kata, and was second in the open fighting section and considering the seniority of his grading he would have been the best in the tournament, Mr Hall said. Others to score wins in both their kata and kumeti sections were Stephen Bell, John Baird and Andrew Butters.
