“Major Accident Imminent?”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the April 9th 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published.
An excerpt from the article read: “Cr Pat Kelliher's waiting for a pile up. And with school buses and four lanes of fast-moving traffic as the ingredients, he's afraid about the size of the accident. What he's worried about are the hundreds of school children and the 20 or so buses which use the bus marshalling area of Rangitikei street, Wellesbourne Street and Edgeware Road. The area's used as a changeover point for school pupils who come into town on one bus and have to change to another to get to school. They have to do the same thing to get home. And the pupils of Boys' High and Queen Elizabeth College are trying to get in and out of school nearby too. The buses they arrive and depart in, have to cross Rangitikei Street during heavy traffic hours. The City Council has just approved the siting of a new bus stop, on the southern side of Wellesbourne Street, after reports of "bedlam" as the buses move around the Edgeware Road/Wellesbourne Street area, picking up and dropping off pupils.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
