Platinum Mine, Kahuterawa
- Description
One of two horizontal platinum mine shafts in the Kahuterawa Valley carved out by Alexander Menesdorffer circa 1875. The mine is located at the northern end of the Toe Toe Loop and is approximately 7 metres in length and is partially flooded, with giant weta inhabiting the roof of the shaft.
A German geologist, Menesdorffer had two fifty acre claims in the Kahuterawa Valley and came to the Hardings Park area in the late 19th and early 20th century from Melbourne to search for minerals, specifically platinum. Traces of platinum were confirmed in 1906, but mining was never commercially established in the ranges.
