A group of about 15 soldiers pose outside the three-storey wooden building. The Young Men's Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.) opened its Soldiers' Hostel in Boulcott Street in August 1916 to provide accommodation for soldiers visiting Wellington on leave from army training camps. The hostel continued operating until mid-1919.
