This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 4 July, 1963. "Around the city are some clever examples of the ingenuity displayed in the construction of unusual letter boxes. The top left photograph shows just want can be done with a worn-out crankshaft to a make a substantial pedestal for the letter box. Top right shows that the old-fashioned mangle, while it may have come to the end of its life for the purpose it for which it was designed, still has uses. This owner has cleverly adapted it to an attractive base for his box. Painted a bright blue and white, it adds to the attractiveness of the driveway. The bottom photograph shows an exact replica of the owner's house and again adds something differen to the property."
