Whineray performed well in the All Black trials: "Whineray surprised even the Palmerston North spectators who hailed him as a future All Black two years ago, when he was then a student at Massey College. Like Meads, he has progressed so fast that there is a no more vigorous player and able captain to be sought anywhere in the Dominion."
