Palmerston North's first state school opened in March 1873 on the corner of Main Street and Princess Streets. In 1890 classes were transferred to a new school in Campbell Street, and again in 1922 to Featherston Street as Central (Normal) School. Information on rear of photograph includes 'State School, Palmerston North. Boys, 159. Girls, 137. Head Master Mr F E Watson. Assistant Mistress, Mrs Watson. Pupil Teachers - Miss R E Relf, Miss M H Dillon, Miss E Stevens'. Christina Moffat (married F A Mills) is seated 2nd row from front, 3rd girl from left.
