Te Peeti Te Awe Awe and the Rose Garden

The reverse reads: "The statue of Te Peeti te Awe Awe was erected in the Square in 1907 by Te Peeti's sister, Erenui, to face the rising sun. Te Peeti was the famous chieftain of the Rangitāne tribe who fought as a Loyalist in the Land Wars 1860-1870s. The gardens around the statue have traditionally been planted with roses, a scene of well-manicured beauty throughout the history of The Square.
