Palmerston North High School cadets, Goldingham Cup winners

Palmerston North High School cadets, Goldingham Cup winners

Cadet units were present in most secondary schools, to train male pupils in military type exercises. The army supplied the training, along with uniforms, rifles and equipment, for a period from 1902, and then training was largely taken over by returned servicemen. The Goldingham Cup was presented to the best 'eight' in the district, for rifle shooting. It was (possibly) presented by Captain S Goldingham who was the first commander of the Palmerston North Guards founded in 1900. Palmerston North High School began in 1902, and separated into Boys and Girls High Schools in 1920.
