Captain C. Holmwood

Captain C. Holmwood was Captain of the "Hydrabad" which went ashore on Waitarere Beach on 25 June 1878 in gale force winds.The "Hydrabad" was a full-rigged iron ship of 1250 tons net register with a length of 229 ft, a depth of 23.2 ft and a beam of 37.2 ft. The ship was built in Scotland in 1885. The ship wrecked on Waitarere Beach (between Levin and Foxton) on the 25 of June, 1887 in gale-force winds while on a voyage to Adelaide from Lyttleton. The hulk of the ship can still been seen at the beach.
