"Look No Cords" - Early Cellphone

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 14 November 1989 with the caption: "Athol Dean of Manawatu TV and Sound waits for the word from the cellular portable telephone his firm has for sale. Local interest is "terrific" but customers wanting to use the phones around Palmerston North could be in for a two-year wait. Telecom's manager Dave Richards said power stations to work the phones were planned for the Palmerston North area in 1989. Larger centres were getting the systems this year and next years, first."
