Refectory and McHardy Hall of Massey University College
- Description
The Refectory was one of the original buildings erected on site for Massey Agricutlural College. It contained a dining room, resident students common room and games room, changing rooms, kitchens and servants' quarters. It now houses offices of Massey University. to the right can be seen McHardy Hall. McHardy Hall resulted from the use of the College Campus as a military training ground during WW II, when the Army established a Staff Training College and Recruitment Office there. They built small pre-fabricated huts which were later used for men’s hostels, and a staff house, known for many years as the Pink Hostel, and later re-named McHardy Hostel. This was constructed as a permanent building on the direct order of Prime Minister Peter Fraser, who on a visit to the college stated that Massey would need such a hostel after the war.
