“Central Districts Squash Players Exceed Hopes”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the October 22nd, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption: “Malcolm McBain (Feilding) practising with John Mills of Cheltenham, just before the Feilding tournament got under way. Both were mebers[sic] of the Central Districts' boys' team.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Four Central Districts players were chosen for inclusion in coaching squads after the New Zealand Junior Age Group Squash champion ships held in Levin recently. The New Zealand junior selectors chose Sheryl Clarke, Wendy Stanton, Simone Gillette (all from Palmerston North), and John Mills of Feilding, for the squads.
Another highlight of the four-day tournament was the final of the girls' under 15 section, in which two Palmerston North club members competed – giving Central Districts a winner, and a runner-up, in that section. Wendy Stanton beat Simone Gillette to take that title.
The Levin Squash Club was host to the tournament, and managed to find billets for 100 players for the four days, as well as successfully organising the championships.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
