Description

This former Post Office telephone booth is thought to have been installed about 1920 or 1921 on the corner of Waldegrave Street and Featherston Street. At the time, it was a one-penny slot machine. After considerable vandalism, it was saved from destruction by the Manawatu Museum Society and leased to a local real estate company, who undertook its restoration. It was displayed on the front lawn of the business, Colin Cook Real Estate Offices (109 Fitzherbert Avenue), remaining there even after the business was bought by Harcourts Real Estate Limited. It remained at the Fitzherbert Avenue location until at least 1986. At time of writing, 109 Fitzherbert Avenue is a vacant lot and the fate of the telephone booth is unknown. (2014)
