Plans for Additions to the Club Hotel, Church Street
- Description
These plans for substantial additions and alterations to the Club Hotel were designed by L. G. West for H. B. Tucker. The Club Hotel was established in 1882, situated opposite the eastern corner of The Square and Church Street. The hotel had sixty bedrooms and was built on two acres of land laid out in gardens and lawns for the use of guests. It consisted of a wooden building dating from 1882 (with additions) and a brick building, built 1905. The hotel continued to operate until 1977 when the wooden buildings were demolished. The 1905 building is on the PNCC Heritage Inventory and has since been used by various retailers. The Danish-born architect Ludolph Georg West (1846-1919) established an architectural practice in Palmerston North in about 1880. In 1912 he formed a partnership with his son, Ernest Vilhem West, who continued the business after his father's death.
