“Caring for Animals”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the October 15th, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published.
The short article read: “It was World Animal Week last week - and people wanting to know more about animal welfare should see the display which has been arranged at the Palmerston North library. Here the display's organiser, Mr Peter French, makes a final adjustment to the material on show. A member of the Vegetarians Society, he says his society was involved in the display because its members have decided not to eat meat, fish or fowl - thus preventing cruelty to those creatures. Also involved in the display are six of Palmerston North's pigeon, cat, dog and bird clubs. He said the display's purpose is to make people more aware of the need to look after animals, and to be concerned about their welfare. He thinks it's the first time such a display has been held in Palmerston North, and he hopes it'll become an annual thing. Information about Palmerston North's animal clubs and the vegetarian society is freely available at the display, World Animal Week commemorates the anniversary of St Francis of Assis [sic], the patron saint of animals.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
