“Bulge Bothers Big Building”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the November 26th, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption: “Marie Comber takes a look at the problem, high above Main Street. The extent of the damage can be seen by the size, of the gap between the tiles and the concrete wall, although the ‘bulge’ may be difficult to determine in our photograph. After the picture was taken a rope net and scaffolding were erected to stop any debris falling to a walkway on the ground. The walkway was also closed off, to prevent any accidents.”
The short article read: “A decision on what's to be done about the bulge in the wall of the Palmerston North Library was still being awaited when the "Tribune" went to press last week. The bulge appeared in the tiled wall several floors above the ground, on the courthouse side of the building last Monday. The cause of the "bulge" was not accurately known, but it was presumed that last week's heat, following the previous week's rain and cold, might have had something to do with it. An engineer with the Palmerston North City Council said if the problem is a localised one, it's likely that the tiles will be removed, repaired, and replaced. But if the problem is more extensivе and affects other tiling on the building's exterior, it's possible that all the tiling will have to be stripped off. The library building was opened in 1965.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
