Construction of the Mangahao Electric Power Scheme

Shown here is the entrance to No.2 Tunnel part of Arapeti Dam, part of the Mangahao Electric Power Scheme. The Mangahao Electric Power Scheme provides hydroelectric power and is situated near the town of Shannon. It serves Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. After being delayed by WWI, construction began in late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924.(A note over the photograph in the original album reads "died - Butler, pump attendant; Maxwell, Tunnel Foreman; Phil Graham and Jock Graham, tunnelers; Miller (Engineer); Fred and Bill Burse, (tunnelers)
