  • "Smoke O"

A large group of army recruits pose outside the canteen, possibly at the Awapuni Racecourse which was home to one of New Zealand’s largest training camps in World War One, and was the sole location for training the New Zealand Medical Corps staff. One of the figures is identified with an "X." The inscription on the reverse reads: "Sept 19th 1918
Dear Minnie
This is the first snap that I have taken in here. The figure marked X is meant for my likeness. This was snapped at one of the spells during parade hours; known as smoke O. Harry."
