The Clock Tower was built in The Square in 1955 through a donation from local businessman, Arthur Hopwood. The sound shell that was originally attached was removed in the 1990s.

Beyond can be a seen a steam train running through The Square. The railway was finally diverted to the outskirts of Palmerston North in 1964.
