View of The Square from the Second Floor of the Grand Hotel
- Description
In the right foreground is The Lakelet - constructed in October 1909. It was the main feature of the last quadrant of The Square to be developed by the Beautifying Society. Directly behind The Lakelet is the old Post Office building (built 1904-1905)- it is shown here without its clock as they were removed from the Post Office tower when it was demolished after the earthquake of 1940. They were subsequently used for the Hopwood Clock Tower (left of Post Office). This clock tower was built in 1957 with a donation from Arthur Hopwood. It has experienced a number of changes including the removal of the original sound shell at the base of the tower (just visible in this photograph) in the early 1990s and the addition of a cross. During 2007 the Hopwood Clock Tower was refurbished and it is now topped with a lantern style cross. To the left of that is the TG (Australasian Temperance and General Mutual Life Assurance Society) Building, which was built in 1938.
