Description

The caption from the book this print was copied from reads, "Two pictures of the old railway station before its removal from the centre of The Square / The top picture shows the back of the station and the arrival of the Woodville Coach, the driver of which, Mr Peters, is credited with having driven for 14 years through the Manawatu Gorge without having met with a single accident. Now this is all done away with, the old coaching days have been supplanted by the iron horse. The bottom picture represents the front view of the station with platform. Standing on the platform will be recognised some of Palmerston North's pioneer settlers. The central figure of the group will be remembered as Mr Alex. Gould, railway porter, now deceased, and whose funeral, although that of one holding only a humble position was one of the longest ever seen in Palmerston, extending from the corner store of Terrace End to the Bank of Australasia, The Square, a distance of a mile and a half. Bearing sad testimony to the high esteem in which the deceased was held."
