The road through the Manawatu Gorge, linking Manawatu with Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay, was constructed in 1871-1872, and the railway line opened in 1891. This photograph, at the Woodville end of the Gorge, was taken prior to the construction of the Ballance Bridge over the Manawatu River.
