Description

Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. In 1957, the Palmerston North Motorcycle Training School was established in response to concern about the number of fatalities involving motorcycles. Stan Key was its leader for 30 years, overseeing a programme of practical bike riding, learning about mechanics, the way an engine worked and the physics of speed. He maintained meticulous records, keeping an enrolment card for each student. Each card has a record of the student's progress, tests scores and often a personal observation of the student's skills and ability. Key was recognised with a Queen's Service Order, awarded in 1976 for his work with the Training School.
