The Miranui Flaxmill, situated on the railway line about 3 miles from Shannon, was established by the Seifert brothers and opened in November 1907 by the Minister of Lands, Hon. T. Duncan. At its peak in 1926, it had nine strippers and employed 300 men. Surrounding the mill was 450 acres of land where fibre was spread to dry. It was the largest mill of its kind in the world.
