“The Thought Of Being Bled”
- Description
-
This image was published in the August 20th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper with the caption: “’There now that didn’t hurt did it?’ charge sister Peggy McLeod says to Feilding’s Jim Horner, holding 500 ml of blood that was flowing through his veins only minutes earlier.”
The article read: “The thought of being bled was not on Jim Horner's mind when he went into Radio 2ZA in George St Palmerston North last week. But minutes later he was flat on his back and the Palmerston North blood transfusion service was gratefully relieving him of 500 ml of his blood. Jim Horner, a Feilding farmer, had earlier gone to the radio station to participate in a radio programme. His visit coincided with the biannual call of the blood transfusion service on businesses in the George St area. Asked if he would help, Jim couldn't really say no – so for the first time in his life he went through the short procedure to help stock up the blood bank’s supplies. About 170 people gave blood on Wednesday and Thursday at the blood bank’s temporary ‘home’ in the Ballroom Astoria. On Tuesday the blood transfusion service will be operating at the Motor Corporation building in Palmerston North.”
