Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. The grandstand at the Showgrounds, later Central Energy Trust Arena, has been extensively damaged a number of times in its history. Opened in 1900 with seating capacity for 2250, it was damaged by a severe storm in 1936. It was damaged by a fire in 1976 and completely destroyed by fire in 1983. A new grandstand opened in 1986, with seating capacity for 15,000.
