Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. Construction on the Mangahao hydroelectric power scheme commenced in 1920. It lies behind Shannon, on the Mangahao River. It was a large construction project, employing 900 men in 1923. The workers lived and worked in difficult conditions. Since its opening in 1924, it has delivered power to the region and beyond.
