Ashhurst School opened in September 1879, with Mr F Whibley as the temporary head teacher. The first permanent head teacher was Mr Alfred Gower (c.1880-1887). The school was under the control of the Wanganui Education Board (here abbreviated as "Wang"). At the time of this photograph, the school comprised of three buildings. The first building was the one on the right, with the middle building added second. The third building (partially obscured, to the left), was later repositioned and converted from a classroom to the school library. The parked vehicle belonged to Schnell, who lived on the corner of Harrison Line and Bunnythorpe Road.
