“Cubs Rally Around”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the October 1st, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption: “David Berkley, Daniel McKenna (centre), and Adam Browne (right) with fistfuls of money, while other members of the pack look on.”
The short article read: “The plight of the Manawatu-Oroua SPCA and a Cub project don't sound compatible but they are. As part of their theme for the month, on animals, the Palmerston North Nikau Cub Pack decided to raise funds to help the SPCA and the animals it looks after. Boys in the pack, which is part of the Raukawa Scout Group, raised $26,73 in two weeks of odd jobs, and presented the money to the wife of the association's Manawatu-Oroua president, Mrs Lila Matheson last week.
Also there was Mrs Joycе Jeff, an SPCA committee member. The Cub's Akela (head of the pack), Mrs Marilyn Tynan, said that the boys heard of the SPCA's financial plight through reading the Tribune". The SPCA had been considering the closure of its Taonui Street centre because of a lack of funds and public support- but since the response from the "Tribune" stories has decided that the centre will remain open, in the crucial summer months at least.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
