Description: The Governor General of New Zealand, Lord Freyberg with Mr W A Jacques at the opening of an exhibition of art works gifted to New Zealand. Mr Jacques was the husband of Mrs Ann Jacques, founder of the Polish Army League, and was a lecturer at Massey Agricultural College. The gifts were sent to the Polish Army League, based in Palmerston North, by the soldiers of the Carpathian Division in Italy. They were made by Polish soldiers to give to New Zealand as an expression of their heartfelt gratitude for New Zealand's treatment of the Polish children refugees and appreciation of the great friendship shown to the soldiers through the sending of correspondence and parcels, during World War Two. The exhibition was held at the C M Ross department store (now the Palmerston North Central Library).
