- Description
-
To mark the Diamond Jubilee of Palmerston North, a programme of events was held from 20 to 27 November. This included the Jubilee procession on the afternoon of Saturday 20 November, featuring participants in historic costume and vintage forms of transport.
The procession departed from the Opera House in Church Street and proceeded to the Showgrounds, via Princess Street, Broadway, The Square, Rangitikei Street and Cuba Street. The Manawatu Evening Standard reported: "The order of the procession was as follows: They Mayor and Mayoress (Mr And Mrs A E Mansford); contestants in the inter-house ladies' sports; a bullock wagon and a Maori canoe, sledges; members of the City Council and their wives and Mr J Hodgens, member for the district; old-time horse drawn vehicles, equestrian groups, cars of former days, Friendly Societies, commercial and industrial displays, decorated cars, juvenile displays and tableaux, decorated motor cycles, push cycles, tricycles and perambulators and pedestrians in fancy costumes." (22 November 1937).
This photograph shows "Messrs L. Burling and D. Scott's bullock team from Aokautere, drawing a canoe mounted on an old-time wagon, the canoe carryying [sic] its full complement of Maori warriors under the leadership of Mr R. Carkeen (Rangiotu)" (MES, 22 November 1937).
