Museum Becomes a School
- Description
-
The first image in this pair was taken for a story published in the Manawatū Standard on 6th December 1973.
Mr Brian Mather gives a talk to pupils from Takaro Primary School on Māori clothing and artefacts.
As part of a pilot project, a collaboration between the Manawatū Museum Society and the Palmerston North Teacher's College, students were taught social studies using museum resources at Amesbury Street and the Society's colonial house, Tōtaranui. At the time, the latter was situated on the corner of Te Marae o Hine The Square and Main Street west.
Lessons were compiled and provided by Mina McKenzie of the Museum Council, Brian Mather, Teacher's College lecturer and member of the Museum Council, and Barbara Gillion, Museum Custodian. Mina McKenzie also visited several schools and spoke to just under 500 students.
"The total figures are 1449 students, accompanied by 101 teachers and parents. The response has been overwhelming."
