This illuminated address was presented to Isabella Essex (nee Brannan) to thank her for her community work in Palmerston North on the departure of her and her husband from the city.

Isabella and Richard Essex arrived in Palmerston North in 1891 and together established a book and fancy goods business in Main Street, near the Railway Station. Richard Essex was Mayor 1907-1908, and Borough councillor 1903-1907.
