"More Traffic Lights in City"
- Description
-
These images were taken for the July 16th, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published.
The small article read: “Traffic lights have been installed at the intersection of Ruahine and Main Streets. And more traffic lights are to be installed in Palmerston North within the next few months. The ‘Tribune’ photograph (above) was taken when the Ruahine/Main lights were Just about ready to go into operation last week (July 19). At the moment they are on ‘independent vehicle activation’. After the lights ‘settle down’ and motorists get used to them they will be linked up with traffic lights at Albert and Victoria streets, to improve traffic flows right along Main Street, a city council traffic engineer, Mr D. Wilson, said. More lights will be installed at the Fitzroy/Vogel Street Intersection, and additional lights are soon to be installed at the intersection of the Square and Church Streets. The Main/Ruahine Street lights cost about $15,000.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
