Description

A road was constructed through the Gorge in 1871-1872, as seen on the left, and the rail line on the right opened in 1891. This early photograph of the Manawatu Gorge shows the junction of the Manawatu and Pohongina Rivers. Ashhurst village can be seen in the background.
