David McEwen (1818-1905) and his adopted daughter Mary. David McEwen was born in Scotland and came to New Zealand in 1839 with his wife Mary (née Neish), son Andrew, parents, sister and brother-in-law. His occupation was then listed as flaxdresser. He and his wife settled in Lower Hutt and had eight children in all. In 1867 they moved to Karere, Manawatū, to farm. David was reputed to be the first postmaster of Palmerston North, at Karere. Mary married Samuel Woodhall.
