Mercury Space Capsule at the Izadium
- Description
Caption stated: "The United States Mercury Space Capsule, lent to Palmerston North for special showing by the American Embassy has been installed in the Izadium (a stadium on the corner of Ferguson Street and Fitzherbert Avenue). The capsule will be on display this week as part of the Health Department's Clean Food Exhibition. Nearly an hour and a half late in arriving in the city yesterday, the capsule was brought here in four parts on flat-backed Army trucks. It has just been exhibited in Napier and before that in Auckland, Wanganui, Christchurch and Dunedin. Army helpers worked to fit the capsule containing a dummy astronaut, in takeoff position, on to its base. On top of this was fitted the second-stage of the rocket and above this again a long lattice work tower. Assembled the capsule stands over 26 feet high."
