School Holiday Programme Activities
- Description
-
These images were taken for the August 27th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption: “Take a pot of glue, plenty of coloured paper and some other odds and ends, and leave the rest to a child's imagination. Leanne Ayers (5) pauses from her work for our camera, but her attention was really elsewhere…”
The brief article read: “The photograph was taken during one of the holiday programme activities organised by the recreation department of the Palmerston North City Council. Hundreds of children have been participating in the daily special activities, being held in the Teachers' College building behind St Pat's Church, in Grey Street. Free buses have been arranged to take the children to and from the courses - and demand for the service was so great on Wednesday that an extra bus had to be put on. The programme has been arranged for the August school holidays, and runs from Monday to Thursday, inclusive, of each week. The special activities are held from 10.15 a.m. until 1.00 p.m. The programme continues this week, finishing on Thursday.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
