Miniature mountain hut from Polish soldier
- Description
This miniature mountain hut, carved by Corporal Walczak, was presented to Peter Fraser, Prime Minister of New Zealand by the delegation of Polish Children Camp, Pahiatua. The mountain hut was a symbol of the longed for Polish thatched cottages. Under the right window is a sign, " Mountain hut in Southern Poland" and on the right side,"Wykonel Kpr. Wladyslaw Walozak". It was one of the gifts made by Polish soldiers to give to New Zealand as an expression of their heartfelt gratitude for New Zealand's treatment of the Polish children refugees and appreciation of the great friendship shown to the soldiers through the sending of correspondence and parcels, during World War Two. This item is held by Te Manawa, Palmertson North.
