Miniature monument in honour of New Zealand and Polish soldiers
- Description
This miniature monument was created to honour New Zealand and Polish soldiers who fell in the fight for common ideals in World War Two. It is made of aluminium and wood in an art deco style. The plate is inscribed, "For our freedom and yours, Tobruk, El Gazala, Monte Cassino", with a stylized Polish and New Zealand army emblem below. The underside is inscribed, " Made by Polish forces No. 175 Wyk. Komp. Warszl". It was designed by a soldier of the Polish Third Carpathian Infantry Division. It was one of the gifts made by Polish soldiers to give to New Zealand as an expression of their heartfelt gratitude for New Zealand's treatment of the Polish children refugees and appreciation of the great friendship shown to the soldiers through the sending of correspondence and parcels, during World War Two. This item is held by Te Manawa, Palmertson North.
