This portrait shows Mary Ann Oakley, an earlier settler to New Zealand. Born Mary Ann Lee in Cheshire, England, 1819, she married her first husband Edmund Perrin in 1838 and had five children. They came to New Zealand on the "Martha Ridgeway" in 1842. After her husband's death, Mary Ann married William Oakley in 1862. They moved to Palmerston North in 1871 where she died in 1894.
