“Mayor Has No Wand – But He Has A Secretary”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the April 16th 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption "Mrs Janson (standing) shows Mr Elwood's new secretary "some of the ropes" of her job. Mrs Norma Hawley, seated, has lived in Palmerston North for three years, and has been secretary to the manager of the PDC, Mr L. W. Goodwin. She's from Cheshire, England.”
An excerpt from the article read: It's surprising how many people really think Palmerston North's mayor has a "magic wand" that will magically deal with any problem they put to him. The mayor's secretary, Mrs Anne Janson, said this during a talk she gave at the Palmerston North Luncheon Club. She was asked to tell something of her job in view of her impending departure from Palmerston North. Mrs Janson, who was second in last year's contest to find the best secretary in New Zealand, is going to Christchurch at the end of this month. Her husband, Garth, has just completed a Phd in agronomy at Massey University and will soon be resuming his work with the resuming his work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Ashburton, where he will be working in lucerne research.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
