This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 11 February, 1959. "Entering the final straight in a race for motor-cycles at the opening meeting of the Palmerston North Three-quarter Midget Club at Milson on Saturday, is Wellington's Bruce Abernethy. Abernethy, twice New Zealand dirt track champion, and described as one of the greatest showmen in the bicycle world, proved too superior in experience for the other competitors, winning most of his races by wide margins. Abernethy has said that he will compete in any other meetings the local club wishes to hold."
