This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 11 May, 1959. "The 1959 North Island chess championships are being held today in Palmerston North. Some of the contestants are pictured above. They are from the left: Mr R. Phillips (obscured) Auckland, a New Zealand title holder at 15 years of age and a New Zealand master chess player. His opponent is Mr B. J. Halpin, Mangakino, who was a player in the reserve grade of the New Zealand championships in 1958. Front left is Mr R. Court, New Plymouth, who was second in the 1957 New Zealand championships and third equal in 1958. His opponent is Mr J. O. Bishop, Morrinsville."
