FEEDER TO THE SERVICES
Palmerston North W.W.S.As Fine Record
[Image]
FINE leader and organiser,
Miss C. Warburton, a repre-
sentative on the Rehabilitation
Committee, and chairwoman of
the district committee of Palm-
erston North, W.W.S.A., is an
inspiration to her fellow-workers.
OF THE groups of women up and down New Zealand who give freely of their time and labor in
meeting and solving problems created by war conditions, probably none has a prouder record than
Palmerston North Womens War Service Auxiliary. Its registration book is a source of pride to the aux-
iliary, for gracing the closely filled pages are the names of 1000 members.
A LARGE number of these
women are now in the services,
nursing, or on overseas duty, but
they still count it a privilege
to have graduated from the
P.N.W.W.S.A., and to which they
still belong.
MEMBERS at home carry on with
undiminished enthusiasm. Now
in its fourth year of activity, the
auxiliary still takes its many and
diversified war job in its experienced
stride.
These range from canteen service
in military camps and clubs, gather-
ing waste paper, addressing enve-
lopes, gardening, doing papier mache
work and making camouflage nets,
to hospital visiting, transport work,
caring for children of servicemens
wives and arranging camp concerts.
It sounds like a wholetime joband
It is!
Possibly the largest and busiest
group is the canteen section,
which is loyally supported by 100
members who report for weekly
duty.
Ask the Womens War Service
Auxiliary has become something in
the nature of a slogan in Palmerston
North, and no appeal is refused. To
members, the word holiday means
nothing for they work at all times,
and at all hours when the patriotic
occasion demands it.
Apart from regular routine duties,
office contacts are maintained by the
auxiliary for registration in the
armed servicessuch applicants at
present being mainly directed to the
Womens Land Army while a
specially appointed member has to
date handled all the registrations of
women in age groups. The auxiliary
also has representation on the Na-
tional Savings Committee, and has
rendered valuable help in [all] national
appeals.
Parades of the auxiliary girls
are always greeted with enthu-
siasm by the Palmerston North
public, and their smart bearing
on these and specially arranged
public displays, fully satisfies
the pride of Sergeant-Major A.
W. Chapman, who puts the girls
through their military paces.
By friendly and loyal co-operation
of committee, leaders and members
alike, has the successful working of
the auxiliary been assured and sus-
tained.
