Description

Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. At least seven ferry services operated on the Manawatū River between 1841 and 1909. A "ferry" was a designated crossing point, while the floating conveyance, attached to a wire rope, was a "punt". In time, many of these early river crossing services were replaced with bridges.
